Bowls from 100-year-old Kipahulu Mango Tree
Grab a piece of history while you can! The mango tree was first introduced to Hawaii in the early 1800s when two seeds were brough from Manila. Later, varieties arrived from Chile and India. These one-of-a-kind chocolate mango bowls are a part of Kipahulu, Maui’s history. They were hand carved from pieces taken from a massive mango tree that was over a hundred years old. The story is that the tree these bowls came from was on the same land that used to be the old Kipahulu cane factory from the 1880s that ran until the early 1900s. The tree and hence these bowls saw over a hundred years of Kipahulu’s history. When the beautiful tree needed to be removed due to private development of the land it was on, I rescued what I could to create a tribute to the island’s history.
I’ve had this wood curing for 15 years and brought it with me to Oregon when I moved off island. Recently, I had the urge and inspiration to create these bowls by turning the wood on my lathe. As beautiful as these bowls are, the real beauty is in their history as this tree and thus these bowls watched Kipahulu’s history and progress through the years. Bring some Maui mana to your home with one of these bowls.
